I fall asleep easily and get a headache when my sleep is interrupted. Whenever aunty Didi came visiting, I prayed fervently for her departure. Initially I thought there was some human generator in the house, because that was what she sounded like until I learnt the word-SNORING! Aunty Didi could snore for Africa! Chai!!
I am sure many can relate with the snoring phenomenon.
Things that annoyed me the most are these:
She was asleep while I was trying to sleep
False breaks; when she stopped and I headed back to sleep only for the snoring to resume. Oh No!!
The smug look on her face, it made me angry!
When I woke her and told her to stop snoring, she snapped at me for waking her up! Aunty Didi, Ha!
She denied that she snored; did she think I was creating sounds in my head?
The annoying rhythm of the snore always made me go berserk!
Of course I had daily headaches and fatigue till she left! I feel the worst thing about snoring is those whose partners snore!!
Snoring is a pain and it has a number of causes. When you sleep, the muscles in your throat relax and sometimes they relax so much that air cannot flow. You gasp for air, and this causes you to snore. Causes of snoring include structural and anatomical causes, alcohol use, smoking, obesity, obstructive sleep apnoea, respiratory infections.
Mild causes of snoring can be managed by making some lifestyle adjustments like:
1. Have a routine sleep schedule
2. Avoid stimulants before bed
3. Practice breathing techniques before bed
4. Create a sleep friendly environment
5. Sleep on your side
6. Elevate your head using a bigger pillow
7. Weight loss
8. More exercise
9. Keep hydrated
10. Avoid sleeping pills
11. Relieve nasal congestion
12. Avoid smoking
13. Perform anti snoring exercises
14. Seek medical help from your family physician.
