Melanie Segard is a 21 year old woman bubbling with life. She loved parties lighted with disco lights and the loud bass from highly powered speakers.
Melanie’s had a job at a packaging company but her dream was to be a weather newscaster on television. Now Melanie suffered Down’s syndrome. Few days ago she got the opportunity and has become a weather girl. See details here
Down syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality that is also called Trisomy 21. It was named Down’s syndrome after the physician who first described it.
Down’s syndrome is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities common to man. It usually occurs by chance but there are risk factors.
At the chromosomal level there are three classes of down’s syndrome.
Among the physical features and many other attributes, those with Down’s commonly suffer abuse first hand from their parents and siblings. This is mostly due to poor understanding of Down’s syndrome by the family.
They commonly suffer mental retardation of various degrees: mild or moderate or severe.
They commonly suffer pneumonia.
Parents of these awesome fellows need to understand that these kids are unique. This will reduce the risk of abuse by parents and siblings.
The major risk factor associated with Down’s syndrome is increasing maternal age. This means that the older a woman is, the higher the chances of having a baby with Down’s syndrome. This is not all inclusive or exclusive.
HOW TO SCREEN FOR DOWN’S SYNDROME:
During pregnancy, Down’s syndrome can be detected through a combination of ultrasound scan and other tests. This is why seeking antenatal care early is advised.
Anyone with Down’s syndrome can reach their full potential just like the weather girl. They have dreams, you know. They can get married too. If you have to get them a job, get one that matches their mental capacity.
If you know anyone with Down syndrome, it is due to no fault of theirs.
If you are in Kano and you have got a loved one with Down’s syndrome I found an awesome school for them at KF place No. 6 Arakan road, opposite Nigerian Red Cross Society Building, Off Nassarawa Hospital Road, Nassarawa G.R.A Kano.
